About me
I have been a Makaton Tutor since 1987 when I worked
as a Speech and Language Therapist in North
Derbyshire with children and adults with learning
difficulties. More recently as a Sure
Start Speech and Language Therapist I have been
promoting the use of Makaton with all pre-school age
children within children's centres.
I have experience of training professionals, workers
and carers (including family members) who support
children or adults with speech, language or
communication delay or disorder due to; general
learning difficulties, autistic spectrum disorders,
sensory impairment, articulation or speech
difficulties including dyspraxia, specific language
impairment, challenging behaviour, non-English
speakers, stroke, dementia.
Following on from the success of the BBC's Mr Tumble I also
regularly run sessions for early years settings as
there are so many benefits from gesturing/signing
alongside speaking to all young children in
terms of helping them concentrate, understand better
and learn language. I am also a Makaton
Signing for Babies Tutor.
I run Taster sessions for undergraduate primary
school teachers and regularly attract students from
a variety of professions on the Level 1 and 2 workshops.
I have been a practising Speech and Language
Therapist for over 27 years and I am a member of the Royal College of Speech and
Language Therapists (RCSLT)
I have a first degree in Speech Therapy from London
University (1983) and a Masters degree from the
University of Manchester (2008) based on research
into the impact of parent-child interaction on
children’s language development. |
