I have been a Makaton Tutor since 1987 when I worked
as a Speech and Language Therapist in North
Derbyshire with children and adults with learning
difficulties. More recently as a Sure
Start Speech and Language Therapist I have been
promoting the use of Makaton with all pre-school age
children within children's centres.
I have experience of training professionals, workers
and carers (including family members) who support
children or adults with speech, language or
communication delay or disorder due to; general
learning difficulties, autistic spectrum disorders,
sensory impairment, articulation or speech
difficulties including dyspraxia, specific language
impairment, challenging behaviour, non-English
speakers, stroke, dementia.
Following on from the success of C Beebies' Mr Tumble I also
regularly run sessions for early years settings as
there are so many benefits from gesturing/signing
alongside speaking to all young children in
terms of helping them concentrate, understand better
and learn language. I am also a Makaton
Signing for Babies Tutor.
I run Taster sessions for undergraduate primary school
teachers and regularly attract students from a
variety of professions on the Foundation workshop.
I have been a practising Speech and Language
Therapist for over 17 years. I am a
practising member of the Royal College of Speech and
Language Therapists (RCSLT) and am registered with
the Health Professions Council (HPC) and Association
of Speech and Language Therapists in Private
Practice ( ASLTIP) see www.helpwithtalking.com
I have a first degree in Speech Therapy from London
University (1983) and a Masters degree from the
University of Manchester (2008) based on research
into the impact of parent-child interaction on
children’s language development.
