What is Makaton?

Makaton is a language programme using signs and symbols to help people communicate. It is designed to support spoken language (both to help understanding and expression) and the signs and symbols are used with speech in spoken word order.

Remember I can also run the workshops at your setting/home or tailor make training sessions around the needs of a particular child/adult.

 

Aims

Who should attend

Taster Session
(1.5 hours)

To provide a general insight into Makaton and who can benefit from its use. To learn approximately 30 signs/symbols and to find out how to access further training if appropriate

Suitable for anyone interested in finding out about Makaton

Beginners Workshop
(2 days or 4 modules)

To introduce the Makaton Vocabulary and its benefits;
To learn signs/symbols from stages 1 - 4 and Additional Vocabulary (approx. 280 signs/symbols);
To explore different ways of teaching and using Makaton on an everyday basis

For family members or carers who need a detailed understanding of how to use Makaton in everyday situations.

Follow-Up Workshop
(2 days or 4 modules)

To further develop signing and translation skills using signs/symbols
To learn Makaton signs/symbols from stages 5 -8 (approx. 200 signs/symbols)

For family members or carers who have attended the Beginners workshop

Foundation workshop
(2 days or 4 modules)

To introduce the Makaton Vocabulary and its benefits;
To learn signs/symbols from stages 1 - 4 and Additional Vocabulary (approx. 280 signs/symbols);
Lecture sessions cover: current research into sign use, symbol design themes, an overview of AAC and how to teach Makaton.

For teaching and professional staff who need a detailed understanding of Makaton in their work setting.

Enhancement workshop
(3 days or 6 modules)

To further develop signing and translation skills using signs/symbols
To learn Makaton signs/symbols from stages 5 -8 (approx. 200 signs/symbols)

For teachers and professional who have attended the Foundation workshop

Makaton Signing for Babies - Train the trainer workshop
(1 day)

To familiarise with each session of the Makaton Signing for Babies group.
To assess participants’ knowledge of Makaton, signing skills and ability to deliver the Makaton Signing for Babies group sessions.

Potential trainers must first complete the Beginners workshop or Foundation workshop. They must also attend a six week Makaton Signing for Babies group.

Makaton Safeguarding
(2 days)

To build on existing knowledge of Makaton and embed within a Safeguarding framework.
To learn topic specific vocabulary.
To develop skills to support a child’s/adult’s understanding and expression to safeguard themselves and communicate their experiences and wishes.

Parents and carers of children and adults with severe communication and/or learning disabilities or professionals who may be involved with Safeguarding issues. Participants MUST have attended the Beginners or Foundation workshops.
